what is the easiest real-world analogy that can explain to a layperson how torque and horsepower function to move a car forward and provide power? i'm looking for something 'for dummies' that doesn't assume any interest or preparation in physics, engineering, cars, etc.

thanks in advance!

Torque And Horsepower For Dummies

Horsepower is like volts (potential difference)
and Torque is like Amps(Current

Volts won't kill you... but amps will!
and likewise Horsepower doesn't win a race, torque does.
You could have 800HP with 430 ft*lb of torque and lose to a car with 500 ft*lb of torque and 600 HP. The torque is what turns the tires on the road.

Torque is the force it takes to push down a morning woody to hit the bowl. Horse power is what it takes to get the urine out of the blasted thing...seriously.

Torque is the push that moves the car.
Horsepower is how much push.
