The whole thing is stupid. It should not be used by anyone! That word was used against "coloreds" back in the days, so why the hell would people want to refer to each other as that now?
It carries the same meaning- IGNORANT. People are calling eachother ignorant. That's smart.

It is an issue of empowerment. Taking the word away from the people who started it as a hateful thing and turning it into your own word takes away the power from the bigots. So you must look at the fact that in certain contexts the word has two completely different definitions, like something as simple as joint. It is a part of your body, a place to go, and something to smoke. Any reasonable non African-American would know that the word coming out of their mouth means quite a different thing and would respect the fact that it is highly offensive to a certain group of people. Why do white people have to find every way possible to get on minorities case? Now you are mad because they have taken a hateful word out of the hands of the hates and made it their own?

Ah, the double edged sword.
If only they were to realize that word carries such negative energies, they would stop using it so flippantly with one another. I also believe they unconsciously are keeping themselves in that frame of mind by using the word... In my experiences I have had, most black people who use this term back and forth with one another, they feel as though we have deemed them inferior and shall forever be that way. And so they are keeping themselves from growing. When a white person uses the term, it offends them because we invented the slur to make them feel inferior- and so it does it's job. If you are white and you try to use the term in their context, it offends them because you are trying to be like them. But in my opinion, you don't have to be black to be a true n-word. True N-word people, they can be white, yellow, american muillato.... I think the term should be all encompassing for people who don't care about anything but themselves. I hate that word.
The color of a person's skin should not be a basis of judgement. I think there are just as many racist african-americans, if not more, than there are racist caucasian americans. All this division, over a slur word. The illusion of separation is something we must overcome.

I think maybe it's about ownership of the word. For such a long time is was used in a negative way toward a group of people. By taking the word and making it their own, they've taken ownership of the word and taken the sting out of it. Gay people call themselves fags sometimes too, for the same reason, I believe.

Enterrador,
I guess it just shows that they are no better than anyone else. We don't mind being called asshole by a loved one or friend, but when a stranger says it, we got issues. I feel as you do, that it is rude, and shows prejudice on the part of blacks who do this. Please remember that these individuals are a minority with their community. Most of the blacks I have known socially, and worked with, hate the N word, and would never use it.

Because one black person calling another black person a n*gger is OK because they're both black. As a white person, if I called a black person that, even if it was in a joking manner, it wouldn't be right because I'm not black and don't know what it's like to go through years of slavery and oppression and unequal rights, and and and... (rolling eyes)

Well, they don't mind taking the mickey out of themselves but know it's lack of respect for others to do to them. Also, maybe to them if we were to call them it the original offensive meaning to the name is taken in-and maybe it was meant by who ever called them the name.
Out of respect we should learn to know the person before using the name-to know if it is part of their lingo. Some don't mind but I wouldn't use because of how it originated and how it doesn't hold anything respectful in the name/s because of its origination.

Hey twin ! ! !
Let's put it this way, if two white people talked to each other calling them self "Hey whitey !" or "Hey pale face !", they would probably accept it from each other. But if, anybody, with a different skin color, or let's say, a different culture would call them the same way, they would probably get offended...
Plus, i think there is a bit of sarcasm in it, like to mock themself about the way they were called in slavery time...
