They are Christians who believe in living of the earth and not using any modern conveniences. Simple living.

Since I live in an area with many Amish I will give you my observations without 'Googling' (as you could easily do). I would describe them as a religious sect that shun modern conveniences and the "English". Not all have buggies, some opt for automobiles, so are probably some sort of outcast. Most are into farming or woodworking.

I'm not exactly sure but from some of the books that I have read they are people who live a very simple life. I admire them for that. They do not indulge in the latest fashion or modern conveniences for the most part. They are deeply spiritual and very family oriented. They do have rules that they govern and live by and punshments when they are not adhered to. I wish that our society could have that. It kind of make me laugh to think of what would happen if we were suddenly without power, cars, phones, TV's and other modern coveniences. We wouldn't be able to survive! The Amish work their lands and take pride in a hard days work. They wouldn't suffer like we would because they rely on natural resources such as growing their own crops, makeing their own furniture, clothing, houses, etc... I respect them very much. It would be great to visit an Amish family for a week to learn more about how they live. It might just change my perspective!

To get a better idea of the Amish and their lifestyles, rent the movie Witness, with Harrison Ford.
They are an amazing people who truly live their beliefs, despite pressure from the mainstream, ourside culture.

A group of people with a religion that claims that technology is evil, pretty much. They usually have farms, ride horse & buggies, but can be found purchasing items at Wal*mart, which entertains me. They are pretty cool people, and they sometimes sell strawberries and other things to support themselves. Their strawberries are the best, too, because they don't use pesticides!

Hope I could help!

From what I'm told they are a group of people who don't believe in using certain modern technologies....I know cars are included in that. I'm pretty sure it's a religious thing.
