I don't have any diagnostic programs running during the day but it sounds like the computer is doing something. Control/alt/delete doesn't show anything either.

Nope. It is not the fan. I know what that sounds like.

If your hard drive isn't working on anything it could be the fan. My computer has a fan that is fairly loud (which doesn't really sound anything like a normal fan, such as you would find sitting elsewhere in your house or in a window), and kicks on even when the computer is idle.

No matter what your computer is doing, idle or not, there is always something running in the background though. Just programs that keep it running correctly, or even spy ware (though hopefully not). Unless is actually is ad- or spy-ware, that running sound your computer makes is probably harmless and nothing to worry about. All of my computers have done it, and they're running fine.

Checking my own Control/alt/delete I see a lot of programs running in the background under the Processes tab. If you're unsure of anything there, and are afraid something is running when it shouldn't be, or that it's malicious you can always check http://www.liutilities.com/products/wintaskspro/processlibrary/ This site I just found a minute ago, and contains a list of many many processes that can be running on your computer, and tells you what they do.

It's probably a number of the fans in the computer. There is one that sits on the CPU to cool it. Another in the power supply. Depending on your video card, one can be sitting on there. Also there just might be a few fans in there to cool off the computer in general, not on any specific components.

If that's making consistent noise. that's not any of your playing cards. till the playing cards themselves have followers outfitted into it. What you want to envision the cooling followers, replace them if want be. also the means furnish itself. The followers in the equipment and powersupply should be loose. or scraping adversarial to the body of the fan casing.

If you have downloaded any games then you have accepted terms of a contract. In that contract is the right by that company to use your computer.

Is it your cooling fan or your cd/dvd drive or A drive going bad?

If you're connected to a Network, it may be the Network simply checking connection.

Also, if you have broadband access, it could be the service checking connections as well.
