Start by checking to make sure that you haven't blocked up the ventilation system with too much stuff on the back wall (that is, if you have some sort of blower evident on the back wall).
If overstuffing the fridge doesn't seem to be the problem, call a refrigerator repairman immediately. In the meantime, move all the food you want to save into someone else's fridge or a cooler. (And before you do that, open the door as little as possible.)
Get an estimate for the repair. If it's more than $100, consider the age of the fridge and the amount of electricity it uses. If your fridge is more than 5 years old, do not repair it. You will realize much greater cost savings by replacing it because refrigerators have become so much more efficient over the past 5 years. Pay back time for replacing a perfectly good working refrigerator that is more than 5 years old with a new efficient refrigerator can be as little as 3 years. But if the fridge you are considering replacing is not working, payback for replacing it with a new fridge will be much sooner.

Check to see that the usual "whirring noise" motor is free of dirt lint etc. Next, the compressor may have developed a leak of the coolant that circulates through the fridge to keep it cool (transfers the heat from the fridge). Make sure that there is sufficient air passing over the motor, such equipment often has a thermal couple that kicks the motor off when overheated.

You should have a repairman come to look at it. It either has too much dirt build up on the coils, is low on freon (doesn't happen very often), or the compressor is going bad.

It could be that the fan which circulates the cold air isn't spinning. That happened to me once. Ice built up around it.

Maybe you have a freon leak. Call a technician to check it out!

You need freon in it, that cost about $100.00 or less.

More than likely it is the defrost system.
