I have windows 2000. when I turn on my computor starting windows comes on, then the windows 2000 screen comes up. after that loads the screen goes blue for 2 seconds then goes dark, then a blue screen flashes for a half a second with some words on it then the laptop shuts down, restarts and the same thing happens. II can hit f8 and go into safe mode and it will keep going and not shut down. Is there anything I can do other than spend $200 to take it to a repair shop?

When in Safe Mode, install AntiVirus software and run it.
Also, take a note of the BSOD (blue screen of death) code and look it up in Microsoft's knowledgebase. This can tell you in a little bit more detail what your problem might be, and how to solve it.

You should install an anti virus program onto your laptop while in safe mode. Then scan it for viruses. When it finds and deletes the virus, try and restarting the laptop in normal mode.

Norton antivirus CD will start running for viruses the moment it starts. Windows 2000 is not only outdated, but it has been a target of viruses. I believe if you insert the CD and start the computer, it may start to help with the virus. Otherwise, you may have to reformat your hard drive.

If you can get into safe mode with internet, try downloading this free virus scanner. It should get rid of any virus if that is the problem.
