I think it is a ridiculous way to spend money, there is plenty of things that would be more worthwhile to spend THAT amount of money on, such as children who are dying of starvation in third world countries or even children and families here in the US who are in great need of financial help. I think its sad to walk around and see all these homeless people, see children on TV just skin and bones and there are people out there like this guy who are spend insane amounts of money on a painting? Could go towards cancer research, or for a children's hospital, the list could go on and on with more helpful things than a painting! It makes me sad...

Yes! Like others have said that could've fed some starving children in a couple of poor nations however invest money like that back into the spenders home country. A battered women's shelter, (I wonder how many abused women have used Estee Lauder products to cover up their husbands abuse!) AIDS Hospice, Animal Shelter....Anything! This is why I do not have any respect for the super wealthy. They are self serving individuals who could care less about anything or anyone who do not equate their station. How about investing that money into programs to help war veterans. Foreign or domestic. If not for them he wouldn't have the freedoms to spend that money as carelessly as he does. What an oxygen thief!

yes i think there is a point where you just have too much money
unfortunately not all rich people think about how fortunate they are. people who know what it's like to be poor will usually be more generous.
I dont hate rich people as such because ultimately they have gotten lucky or put thought into creating what they have (people who get rich by making their employees low paid slaves or being dishonest are another issue)
i remember there is some super rich dude that said he isnt going to hand his inheritance over to charity instead of to his kids because he wants them to appreciate the value of money. people call him a tightarse or whatnot, but i respect him for that. when you go out and work for money you tend to respect it more.
if you inherit it, you are not going to know any better. ( hence 135 million dollar painting)

yes, i agree. i'm a physician and make about $75,000 a month. i often feel guilty about this because that's what most normal people make in a year.
when going on vacation, we often travel overseas, cruises, or extended trips and i do feel a bit guilty. but i always take extra cash and when i see people needing help, i give the money.
i also have credit cards i place at our local pharmacies and when the elderly need medication and they can't afford it, i charge it to those cards.
this Lauder could have done a lot of good with that money rather than buying a painting.

This is a waste of money, and I like art and I am a senior art student, but the cost of that painting could have provided homes for about 275 families!! and he could have commissioned a very good copy of it to be made for him so he could still enjoy it just as much. Sinful isn't it? Someday the rich of this world will have to answer for why they didn't help out more people that are struggling to survive on this planet, although of course many do help out financially.

No. It's all relative. While $135 million is a lot to you, its only a small percentage of this man's net worth. Plus, he probably will double his money on the purchase.

People wonder why we have starving people in the world. Well just think of all the food that that money could have bought. I definitely think some people have way to much money and also don't know how to use it properly.

If you think of how many starving, sick and dieing kids that money could have saved, and it was wasted on a painting that he could have gotten a print of (or a paint by number and done it himself), purchasing that is borderline evil

If he has the money and really likes the painting then hey, who are we to judge?
If I had the money and there was something i REALLY wanted to get I would get it regardless of its price.
