Some children with autism do demonstrate self injurious behavior as a means of gaining sensory input which actually calms them. I would discuss this with your pediatrician and possibly ask for a referral to a developmental specialist. I am a special education pre k teacher, and have seen many pediatrician's gloss over a parent's concern when there is something definitely wrong. Many parents are afraid to question the doctor, but you know your child. You may not know specifically what the problem is, if in fact there is one, but your doctor only sees him for 5 minutes. Be sure you give your doctors specific examples of the behaviors you are concerned about and tell him how often these behaviors occur. Ask him for a referral to a pediatric specialist for your own peace of mind. Please know that I am not trying to alarm you or say there is something going on with your child; but if he does this type of thing, there may be something going on and you want to do everything you can to rule out problems or developmental disorders. Also consider if he is progressing in other areas at a normal rate. There have been many normal kids who display odd behaviors but then grow out of it. I had a friend who had a son who started banging his head on anything he could when he was an infant. He did have autism with SIB (self injurious behavior), so it's best to convince your pediatrician to refer you out to a specialist.

Ask your pediatrician for a referral to a developmental pediatrician. This should be common practice by now, but for some reason$$$ it not. Most regular pediatricians barely studied about autism, since it was rare until recently.
At the very least it could give you peace of mind. What mom couldn't use that?

My son was the same at that age he used to head butt everything including his brother, he is now 20 months old and has more or less stopped doing it (unless he is in a temper), but it does no harm to go and get the opinion of your doctor just for peace of mind.

I would take him to the doctor and tell them what is going on..You dont want him to do it on the floor or something that will bruise is head or face.. I would just get him checked out and see if there is something going on there that you might not be aware of.. If ever in doubt its best to ask your doctor.. Better safe then sorry..

lol, convinced she is is gaining knowledge of the thanks to regulate her muscular tissues, she is likewise gaining knowledge of action/reaction to ascertain what takes position even as she does this. Be prepared, with my son that went away at about 4 months and got here decrease back at about a 12 months and a 1/2 because he thinks its humorous, possibly that section is only a guy difficulty lol, i'm certain she will be able to outgrow it quickly, she (and also you) will recognize if she is hurting herself, get waiting for a large number of stupid and unusual conduct to seem, that's a lot relaxing!

My son also likes to head butt and has even hurt himself by hitting his head on the floor. He's almost 3 now and is perfectly normal. Still likes to head butt though. He does it alot when playing but mostly when he is tired and mad. I'm sure your son is fine. If you are still concerned you may want to bring him to a dr to relieve your fears.
