In the security settings of the file.... update your question to say what OS you're using and I'll update my answer with more specifics.

The best way is to disable to "Read" permissions of the folder that contains the files that you want to hide from the other users, that way they won't be able to get a directory listing of the folder so they won't even see what files are inside it. Just be carefull when you change the settings because you might disable your own ability to view the files :-P

The link below is for Windows 2000 server, but the concepts are the same for Windows 2000, Windows XP Home/Pro/Media Center

open my computer
go to tools menu
select folder options
go to View tab
in Advance setting find Use simple file Sharing and deselctit
then apply
so for folders security tab will active
right click on folder u want to be private
select properties
go to security tab
in Group and User names , select the user name of profiles u want to not access your folder
and and permissions for administrators select Deny in Full control
so others can see the folder but can never open it
and remember that this will work for u if your file system is NTFS

s my dear friend using a freeware from www.download.com and as it's mentioned its totally free. 1) Security PRO Pack 1 2) Secrecy File & Folder Hider 2.1.

I think these freewares could help to solve your problem.

you can encrypt them through properties
other users will be able to see there is a folder or file but they wont be able to access it
right click-properties-advanced-check the encryption box
