I would go with the Haynes manual. Synthetic is always a good choice in air cooled engines due to it's higher temp capability. Check with BMW first, though. There's been some controversy over the nicasil liners, but I think that has to do more with gas and sulphur content.

yes you can . My brother owns a BMW 3 series. he had the oil replaced with synthetic, ran it for 1 hour and then had it completely changed again . I know it sounds a bit extreme , but the first oil change removed "trash", and then the second one is for longer term . 3 years or 3000 miles.

synthetic is noticably 'slippery-er' and will show any seals that are less than perfect (they will leak) If its pretty new/low milage (less than 12,000miles) there shouldnt be any problems. If you do get any weeping from seals, cyl head gaskets, rocker cover etc, switch back to conventional oil. There are no problems switching from one to the other.
BTW, Harley Davidson specifically said synthetics would cause engine damage
... until they brought out their own synthetic ?????

I would ask the service manager at a BMW motorcycle dealer, and follow their recommendation.
