Allright I just bought a laptop from Circuit City. It's an HP Pavilion dv 1000 Notebook. Pretty new, it came right off the shelf. One problem I'm seeing is that I charged the brand new battery and the little lightning bolt charge light went off, so I assumed it was finished charging. And when I loaded it up and checked the battery icon in the system tray, it was at 96% which was good enough for me. But I used it for probably a total of 15 minutes and the battery was around 80% already. Is that normal for laptop batteries or did I not charge it properly?

Depends how you use the laptop. I use mine at home, never take it out, and for that I just keep the AC plugged in and take the battery out (after discharging the battery completely). If I need to take the computer somewhere, I just re-charge the battery.

Anyway, yes, it's normal for the battery to discharge a little every time you turn the thing on and off. The battery icon will show for a while and then go away and it will show the AC. You can also make sure that the thing uses AC instead of battery (if you keep the battery always in the computer) even when you're using AC, by specifying AV power only (I can't remember where I once set this on my HP laptop).

How long is the battery expected to last on a full charge? If it an hour and a half, your time calculations maybe correct. What type of processor does it have? Some processors pull more power as do the accessories.

Yeah, that sounds normal. My battery fully charged for mine lasts 2 1/2 hours. My friend's laptop battery fully charged lasts 3 hours.

It really depends on the type of battery you have, but the cheaper Nickel-Cadmium battery is common. With the Nickel-Cadmium battery, you will be lucky to use your laptop a full hour before recharging. With a Lithium Ion battery, you could use the laptop up to two hours before recharging.

depends on the processor type. if its an athlon 64, you'll only get about 1.5-2 hours, a turion will get you maybe 3 hours, pentium 4 1.5 hours, pentium m based processor around 5 hours.
