Hmmmm....didn't know it was...I have a (female) friend named Leslie! Should I tell her she has spelled her name wrong all these years!
I think it's just a personal choice. I know what you mean, as the name Jessie can be spelled Jesse, which is the more common version used for men. But nowadays you just never know! It's nice to have a name sometimes that's obviously male or female so people know what to expect when they see the name in writing. But it doesn't always work that way, does it?

Leslie is for a boy, Lesley is for a girl. It can be spelled either way but that is the correct way.

Maybe it's related to the spelling of Francis for a guy and Frances for a girl.

I believe it goes back to conjugation of words. In some languages a femanine word ends with a and the male aspect of the same word will end in e. So male name ends with ie and female with y.
