why?

because the Olympic games were in honor of the Gods.. and women, non citizens and slaves were considered inferior.

The whole naked thing was kind of gay.. but so were a lot of greeks in that time.. homosexuality was pretty accepted in that area at that time.

That's not entirely true. Only men who SPOKE Greek were allowed to participate in the Ancient Games. They were to some extent "international", though, in the sense that they included athletes from the various Greek city-states. Additionally, participants eventually came from Greek colonies as well, extending the range of the games to far shores of the Mediterranean and of the Black Sea.

Non Greeks also competed. Some of the more famous one were:

Tiberius (steerer of a four-horse chariot)

Nero (steerer of a ten-horse chariot)

Varastades, Prince and future King of Armenia, (last known Ancient Olympic boxing victor during the 291st Olympic Games in 388) .

Participation in the games was limited to male athletes; the only way women were allowed to take part was to enter horses in the equestrian events. In 396 BC and again in 392 BC, the horses of a Spartan princess named Cynisca won her the four-horse race.

The athletes usually competed naked, not only as the weather was appropriate but also as the festival was meant to celebrate, in part, the achievements of the human body. Olive oil was occasionally used by the competitors, not only to keep skin smooth but also to provide an appealing look for the participants. Competitors may have worn a kynodesme (an early type of jock strap)

Its no different then allowing only free male citizens to vote, to the Greeks, right or wrong, Men were superior and only free citizens should be honored with the glory of the olympics.

hmmm, lets think about it. It was long before any women had any rights let alone were allowed to participate anything. White males thought they were superior. Oh ya it was created in Greece!

They didn't think females were fit enough to compete. Why they couldn't watch either I'll never know.
