I'm an amature calligrapher and have not had a chance to take classes with a master yet. I have used many different kinds of paper, with varying results, but none satisfactory to me. I know the paper has to have a smooth surface, preferrably made from cotton not wood. Beyond that I cannot find any info on the web.

Masa is a bright white, translucent hard-surfaced sulphite paper, nice for calligraphy. Or if you don't mind an opaque paper and want cotton, why not try 90lb hot-pressed 100% cotton watercolour paper. Rice paper is a good choice too, the hard-surfaced ones with no slub don't bleed.
My choice for calligraphy is still vegetable parchment, comes in the most natural-looking colours and behaves the best.
