Why did Sandra N and Dennis L, go to Alabama to get married?

Sandra thought she was hidding from some of her relatives? Did Dennis also think the same? Why did they not just fly to Vegas like they wanted to? Did Sandra "have to" get married? Doesn't that mean she had to be with him at least several months?

maybe she got married because she loved him, and they didnt have enough money to go to vegas so they settled on alabama instead...
