I think that there are two sides to this. There are obvious examples of this "brainwashing" - presenting Uma Thurman as sex symbol comes to mind, and the whole "pale blond" thing in general. I'm not really convinced that works, though. I don't know anyone who lusts after those pale blonds who are usually presented as sex symbols, though of course if we see a photo of one wearing very little clothing we're going to look at it.

On the other hand, there seems to be a lot of people convinced that men's preferences are simply the result of media/cultural pressures, and that we could raise men to be attracted to overweight women. That's simply false: quite a bit of our sexual preference is built into our genes. Those preferences are there for a reason, and the idea that it's only shallow culture that determines them is just wishful thinking.

Advertising through media including the beauty industry is no more brainwashing than learning, it is a form of programming into the mind to persuade the customer to buy, like learning through revising etc is programming ourselves to remember what we learn, they do to 'sell' by media
We are only brainwashed as much as we wanna be ;)

Beautiful people helps 'sell', it's the business using the best to be the best.
You never get a second chance to make a first impression ;) and when it comes to advertising beauty is the best way to attract. We all love beautiful things

Actually, no.

Modern media is a business venture, and they report what sells. The image of "ideal" beauty presented by the media is the image that we are most willing to buy. Thus, the media haven't taken it upon themselves to decide what is beautiful. They are merely reflecting society's prevailing opinions on beauty.

The media does not brainwash us, and doesn't have to. We do a great job of brainwashing ourselves.

Yes... although a part of me wants to say, "Duh!!"

Have you noticed...?
The person who does the casting may not pick the most beautiful actor/actress for the role, but when the script says that character is hot, we all believe it...
