Although it is great to have a girlfriend or a boyfriend, its also great to live the single life. If you can't enjoy time with yourself and be around yourself then you really don't need to rush into getting a boyfriend or girlfriend so no, I don't think it's "necessary".

Absolutely not "necessary". In my very humble opinion, you can be perfectly happy without a significant other. Having to be with somebody all the time is a very desparate situation.
