It was his last game. He was captain of the team. His job as a captain is to lead his team mates to victory by showing control and respect. The words exchanged by both players caused for Zidane to react in the way he did but he should know better!
Had Zidane not responded in the way he did, he might not have been asked to leave the field.
He should apologize to everyone. That includes us the fans. His example for those who are passionate about the sport cannot follow in the same foot steps as Zidane. Children learn from what they see_this is one reaction that should not be learn but if a top player reacts that way, the same reaction is learned and then practice when playing.
Yes, apologize and actually mean it when you do.

When you are a celebrity like Zidane that people/children look up to, you have a certain amount a responsability to set a good example for them. There is no doubt that he is an amazing athelete but he should also set a good example as a man. Yes, the italian player probably provoked him with his words because he knew that Zidane's weakness is his temper and it worked! If Zidane wants to show that he is a real man, a good example for all, then he should apologize to everyone, his team, his fans, and even the italian player. It would show that he is humble and humility is not weakness, it's a quality of strength that may win him back the respect of the world.

He should apologise to his French team mates and I probably think he has anyway for letting them down.
To Meterazzi, he doesn't need one because he ASKED for it with the sole, devious intent of provoking Zidane and getting him sent off which he knew would demoralise the French team into a weak team = possible victory for Italy
Mind you France still did exceptionally well in the penalty shoot out in contrast to England's lousy record except for one guy who missed it with sheer bad luck. Buffon didn't prevent that missed goalie. Some people say Italy didn't win, France just lost.

Al - according to your logic all Italians should be butting YOU for insulting them and that THEY are all victims.
You just come across a serious sore loser !
Materazzi got what he probably deserved and so did Zidane ! Both show that the game is not about football anymore.

Zidane should apologise to his team-mates for losing his head and setting a bad example. He should acknowledge that he was goaded by Materazzi and he acted inappropriately, but not apologise.

Absolutely NO, NO, NO. We all have our own dignity. Zidan is the one who has to keep his own dignity and honour. Instead of asking him to apologize, we all should have some reactions to those who do the verbal harms as well as the physical harms in the world match. What is happening to us, football fans? We cheer and give honours to the winners and we don't care how they win. That's why they use all kinds of tricks to be the winner.

He cant have the ban as he has retired from International Football.
If an apology is to be made it should be made both ways (From the Italian bloke too) and I think a charitable donation should be made as a gesture of remorse

No one needs to apologise for defending your honour.
Chill out for god sake, it was only a header.
Its not as if he punched or kicked him.
I prefer the self-satisfaction of retaliation rather than some Cup.
