Right now It's the only one I use, and the other programs mentioned below.
I use all of the following Free software with Windows XP SP2 and Internet Explorer with MSN toolbar and the pop-up blocker turned on and have never had a single problem with my computer sense Microsoft came out with SP2. (knock on wood.) (And be sure to keep Windows and the following software Updated)
The best Anti-virus is: AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition. (www.grisoft.com)
The Best Spyware defense is: SpyBot Search and Destroy (www.spybot.info)
AND: AdAware SE (www.lavasoft.com)
AND Spyware Blaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.info/kb/)
The best Firewall besides the one that comes with Windows is: Zone Alarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/co... or just (www.zonelabs.com) and select the FREE version.
These are all FREE and are all that are required. There is no reason to pay for this kind of software, except to give a donation to the writers if you can.
ALL the above programs are recommended and should be run on a regular basis. With some the free versions they must be run manually.
The best way to avoid getting any Malware (virus, Trojan's, spyware, etc) is to practice safe computing. Microsoft and many others have countless articles on the subject of safe computing. (something I think should be taught in schools)

AVG Software is a good Anti Virus to my experience. The good part is it does update it's virus database even for the free version.

Have used it on five PCs in my house for about 2 years now without any infections. You just have to keep it up to date (which it does automatically for you every day).
Just remember that unlike Norton or McAfee, it is ONLY a virus scanner. You will also want to be sure you have an anti-spyware (like Microsoft Defender) on your PC, and an active firewall (Windows or another like ZoneAlarm).

I have used Norton and have had many problems. I now use AVG 7.1 Professional, which I ordered online. It was neatly delivered to my postal address in SA within two weeks after download. I am very impressed with its inner-workings!

I think it is, i got rid of nortons anti virus as it slowed down my pc so much ( new pc Pentium 4, 1 gb ram etc ). AVG updates itself and works, can't say more than that

I use it together with Yahoo toolbar anti-spy. Works much better than my previous (bought and paid for) AV, which hogged all my memory and slowed down the computer to a crawling slug going up hill. Now, I'm reasonably fast, virus free, and protected.
