Radipole Lake Weymouth.
The lake, within a large SSSI nature reserve is unique, being within 400 yards of both the sea and town centre.
Access is therefore easy with routes from the north via A354 from Dorchester, from the east via A353 from Wareham and B3157 from Bridport and the west. A large pay and display car park is adjacent to the water and there are many hotels and guesthouses within walking distance. Weymouth Railway Station is just a few minutes walk away.
The RSPB administer the Nature Reserve and care must be taken by anglers not to disturb the birds and wildlife of the reserve. This is vital during June when some birds may still be nesting.
The water has a restricted number of pegs and fishing must be from these areas. It is planned that further pegs be introduced in the future, dependent on funds being made available.
The fishing can vary but the lake is generally considered as a 'hard' water. However the action can be good if the large carp, for which the water is well known, make an appearance.
For the non carp angler the lake has a very good head of roach with fish over 2lb being caught during 1998. Perch, dace as well as some large pike can also be caught and unusually for a freshwater lake, a number of soft lipped mullet enter the water from the sluices controlling the lake level from Weymouth harbour which is adjacent.
Tickets for fishing the water are available from:
Weymouth Angling Centre , 24 Trinity Road, Weymouth - Tel: 777771
A two rod rule applies, barbless hooks and importantly no bivvies or tents are allowed. Day ticket means dawn to dusk, so no overnighting on day tickets.
The Council who own the site have a bailiff who may ask to inspect your permit and NRA licence. Failure to supply both will result in the angler being asked to leave the water.
This is a sensitive site and anglers are requested to ensure they take all their litter home and disturbance of the other lake users is kept to a minimum.
