Everyone says practice... but only practice techniques that are correct. If you practice poor swing mechanics, then you will have a poor swing. Now is the time to learn to do it correctly. Likewise, if you practice poor throwing mechanics you are very likely to injure your elbow or shoulder and that can derail any opportunities you may have to pursue a baseball career. Find a coach who can help you develop the mechanics correctly and be faithful to your practice sessions.
Running is essential for endurance. Nine innings is a long game and you must have the strength and endurance to not only complete the game strongly, but also to play the next day.
In contrast to the endurance work, you need to be able to run from first to third and second to home at full bore and still be able to handle getting caught in a run down. So anaerobic conditioning is equally important.
Those things are all tangible. Even if you have the talent, you must also have the desire and determination. Many players that are stars in high school didn't have to work very hard to be better than everyone else. When they make it to the minor leagues or college, they find out that everyone there has just as much talent or more. They find themselves a bit overwhelmed by the fact that they are going to have to work very hard just to make the team and they often give up because they weren't prepared for that. The guys that survive are not only talented, but determined. You must have that determination, because sometimes that is all that you have to get you through a tough situation.
Baseball also has to be a year-round commitment if you are going to make it to the major leagues. Players in the southern US, Latin America and South America are playing year round. You are not just competing with players in your city or state, but are competing with players from around the world. There are 30 major league clubs with 25 players on each roster for a total of 750 players. That's pretty stiff competition if you consider how many kids play baseball in just the USA.
You are asking the right questions, so that is a good first step. Being successful at this is not about having all of the fancy equipment, but is about being dedicated to doing the best you can do and being willing to be taught how to do it correctly.
Best of luck...

Practice is most important...if you are a fielder, take hundreds upon hundreds of ground balls, fly balls a day. Take 200 swings in the cage a day...lift weights & run constantly.
Baseball players are in absolutely tremendous physical shape. Pitchers throw on a daily basis, whether it be long toss or bullpens. They run mile upon mile in the off season.
Basically, if you want to be an MLB player, you must give up most of what you love to do with your free time, and devote it to baseball. That means, no partying out late at night...not eating junk foods all the time...a lot of sweat, blood, and tears basically.
And when you have given that, you have to give 100 times more just to get to the big league level. Over 1500 players are drafted every season, and maybe 1% of them ever make it to the big leagues. If you devote your life to practicing baseball, and with a little luck, you might have a chance.
Be patient, work your tail off, and good things will happen.
(PS- the easiest way to stick aroun din baseball is to play a position not many players can do...CATCHER. Either that, or be a Left Handed Pitcher :)...teams love those)

I have the same dream. One thing, never let any idiots derail you by saying its just a fantasy. remember, how could Nolan Ryan get there if he had listened to people telling him he couldn't go? I am a pitcher and I throw every day. I run every day, I workout every other day. Practice the proper stuff. If you play football depending on what age your at that could be bad. i am only eighth grade and plan to quit after this year because injury can occur. The best way for recognition is getting to the college level and they won't take you if you have been injured badly. thats all I can say really. Just never give up. Maybe one da we will be playing each other.
