Terrorism exists in many places in the world. Like England, Palestine, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Africa and other places.
(1) One of the causes of terrorism is the failure of justice. The strong/majority group thinks that they can violate the rights and aspirations of a minority or the weaker community.
(2)The normal channels of grievance redressal ae manipulated in favour of the stronger community and there is absence of level playing field.
It happened in America too before the war of independence.
(3) The atrocities become intolerable and some young and hot blooded people take up the cudgels to fight for what they think is right.
(4)In some cases political strategy encourages terrorists as in Afghanistan. One super power wants to fight another in the cloak of terrorism. Political depravity is one of the major reasons for continued existence of terrorism.
Che Guevera was one example where he felt strongly that he was fighting for a right cause.
(5) Once terrorism raises its ugly head, then it becomes self sustaining because there is death on both sides and nobody wants to forget or forgive the other. They seek revenge and the bloody saga continues.
(6)Tolerance and love of justice for all is essential to wipe out terrorism. Slogans like "we or them" do not help in bridging the gap. If you are a strong country or strong community then you have to sacrifice many things to win over the hearts of the weaker ones. Lots of patience is needed in dealing with others.
Just an example to illustrate a point. If Mr. X was rich, strong and powerful and he starts throwing his weight around, will you love or respect him if he is bullying you. The same thing applies to nations. Since the weaker ones cannot win in an open confrontation they resort to guerilla warfare and terrorism.
(7) Lack of opportunities is another factor.
(8) Lack of understanding also causes intolerance. A chauvinistic attitude of "My system is superior to yours" leads to ill feelings. for example, More people died in the name of God than were saved. These kind of wars were fought in Egypt, Europe, Bethlehem, Arabia and many other places at different points of time in history. Is it not stupid to continue to fight in the name of God? In modern times it is being fought by Islamic terrorists.
We should be eclectic and embrace whatever is good in all systems and reject the bad in all systems including our own.

Perceived Injustice is the root of why smaller, militarily inferior groups strike out at larger groups....terrorism is a form of warfare used by those who have a military disadvantage...The war in Iraq has killed thousands more than "middle eastern terrorists" though because it was started by the US it is not labeled "terrorism"...in the US those in favor of liberty from Britain were chastised because they fought from behind trees - the tactic was considered shameful at the time...colonists learned the tactic from Indians...and it made sense because there was no way the Americans would beat the British toe to toe standing out in the open...the same could be said for the "terrorists" they will not win on the battlefield and they often have no other means of getting their point across... groups that undertake terrorism are not all the same, some have valid gripes, others are zealots and unreasonable...the bottom line is the winners write history and the powerful frame the news...but unanswered injustice often leads to "terrorism"...It is kind of interesting that today with the word ":terrorism" being said in every other sentence that more people don't really know why these people are attacking buses, trains, and markets...but when you remember the powerful write the news...then it makes sense.

There is no one root of terrorism. In fact, terrorism itself is only a label placed upon actions of people. Yes, the acts that these people commit are atrocious, but did we not do the same thing when it was in our best interest? Before we became a country, the US did many things that would appall people if they knew what had happened. But these things are gently swept under the rug and kept quiet because we ultimately won. History is written by those who have killed men. It is written by the views of the victor. So, in this respect we could say that if these terrorists succeed in their ultimate goal, whatever it may be, that they will be the ones to write about their great good cause, never once calling themselves terrorists, but instead revolutionaries. Furthermore, if we win we will simply scribble down a few pages in the books about the terrorist groups and evil regimes that we destroyed and toppled. Its all in a matter of perspective. Just like racism. Everything is determined by how you look at things and what your actions and beliefs are.

Well, if Al Qaeda is the focus of your question, it hiustroically was funded by Osama Bin Laden, troops were trained in Libya, they got troops mostly from Jordanian Palestinians, and had recieved money and weapons also from Afghanistan. Currently Libya is no longer involved in the training of terrorists. THeir leader Quadaffi, has become the U.S.'s inside man for help on terrorist information. In fact, he would warn us constantly before he was assigned the unofficial position. If you look at the Oklahoma City bombing, WTC attacks in 93, the subway bombings in Japan, and 9/11, very close to the day they happened, newspaper articles can be found with articles saying the same thing, Libya wants to strengthen ties with the U.S.. This happens everytime. Quadaffi wanted to let us know that he had no part in what was about to happen. He alsways knew because when his relationship with Al Qaeda dissolved he still had people loyal to him. There are traces in the Phillipines too. Terry Nichols, Timothy McVeigh's accomplice, would visit the Phillipines often. People said it was where his wife was from, but she lived and came from a different city than where he would go. Al Qaeda's strategic leader was stationed there. Make no mistake, Oklahoma was not an internal terrorist act, it was by Al Qaeda.

The end of the cold war between Russia and the US, the eventuall collapse and disintegration of the Soviet Union and the inevitable "victory" of the Afghan mujdhadeen fighters in Kabul gave the muslim fundamentalist a sweet taste of triumph which they wanted to carry over till the present times. With the Russians out of the picture, muslim extremist now have the ballgame in their hands. Whatever political agenda they have, its all hidden behind religion which is clearly illustrated when they call for 'jihad'. Religion and politics is no doubt behind the muslim extremist grand plan of creating terrorist cells all over the world. Islamic agenda is towards world domination even if it take many more generations.

Some would say that its Islamic extremism. However how does one get converted into an extremist. They must have a lot of hate from something and no one keeps statistics for how much hate is generated from Isreal and America's last 100 years of trying to control the region economically and militarily.
