I have 128MB of RAM and one slot free. Would my PC still run smoothly under 128MB and 512MB or would I have to get a 256 instead of the 128?

Also: Does any component go with any computer?
Is there a piece of software like Belarc that will tell me if I have DIMM RAM or SIMM RAM? (read about it on PCWorld site.)
What's the difference (in basics and leave out the non essential bits because I gather it would probably take a while to explain them all, even explain it in terms of "Great", "Good", "Terrible", "N/A" etc. if you want. :P) between DDR Memory, DDR2 Memory, SDRAM Memory and SODIMM Memory.

You'll need to check your computer's owners manual, or the website.

SOME computers allow you to mix different sizes of RAM, while others don't.

As for what type RAM youe computer uses, again check owners manual, website...

The link below will tell you what type RAM your computer uses.

Yes, you can use 1x128mb and 1x512mb, you dontneed to throw out the 128mb stick.

Make sure the 512 you buy is the same type and speed(frequency) as your 128 and everything should be okay.

SDRAM: technology of the previous decade
DDR: Many people still use it. Not bad
DDR2: Current generation memory. Naturally the best choice
SODIMM: Laptop memory. Comes in SDRAM, DDR, and DDR2 flavours.

mlaheji's answer is good but please note that your bound to the type of memory that your main board supports. You can't use DDR modules on a SDRAM main board, it simply wouldn't fit.

Also using different types of modules (128+512) won't always work, but if you have an older computer there's a good change it will.
