I just saw on the news that the train bombing took place in Mumbai, formally Bombay, India. When and why did that name change? I'm just getting used to Istanbul!

well to an extent, it's always been know as mumbai, but when the british and portugese settled in india, they kind mispronounced it and made it into bombay. alot of people in india never stoped calling it mumbai really. officially it was changed to mumbai in the mid 90s i think.

Forst, Original name was MUMBAI. At the time of British, they could not speak MUMBAI, they used BOMBAY in place of MUMBAI. So it was continued BOMBAY. But , about five years before, local people (one leader) thought that it should be MUMBAI only, So, the name was changed.

Same way, CALCUTTA 's original name is KOLKATTA. that is also changed after mumbai.

U see, anything can happen in INDIA.
