The best place is at the airport when you arrive. The rates are as good or better than anywhere else and you'll have usable money in your pocket for train tickets, taxis etc.
Next best is to use a bank card to obtain cash from ATMs, but ensure these are free ATMs which are usually found outside banks. The stand alone ones found in shops and pubs often charge a hefty service fee.
Most places in UK accept credit cards, so you shouldn't need much cash. But note that UK credit cards are now 'chip and pin' authorised now with PINs, not signatures. So if you go to a place off the tourist path that isn't used to foreign cards you might have to explain that your card doesn't have a chip and thus a signature is acceptable. You might want to print the relevent page from here - http://www.chipandpin.co.uk/reflib/Retailer_Post_14_Feb_FINAL.PDF
Lastly, the Post Office, offers a good exchange rate. But you can exchange money almost anywhere in the UK at banks, travel offices, bureaux de change and the Post Office.
Whenever exchanging cash you need to know the exchange rate and the commission and work out which offers the most pounds for your dollars

I usually find a post office, as they don't charge an exchange fee and I always assume I can trust them a bit more than some of the shops on the street. But take along your credit or debit cards, as most places will take them and then you won't need as much cash.
Where ever you go, always check the fee and the rate, as those that don't charge a fee usually will give a bit less in the exchange.

The best should be the Banks... because there is no charge on exchanging the US Dollar=UK Pound... & they all will give you the best rates.
Ignore the High street forex counters... their rates for exchanging for $ = pound is too high...
Example:
In the banks: 1Pound= $1.85
At the high streets: 1Pound= $2.00
the other & more cheap way is get your dollar exchanged into pounds in USA... they will give even better rates...
or if in uk... try TRAVELEX- they have low charges... about 2-3%
... hope dis helps!!!

i ought to sidestep replacing it contained in the airport because they frequently haven't got strong change charges. some banks contained in the U. S. will change funds and both have overseas change accessible or can order it for you. I exchanged my funds at Wells Fargo and it became fairly accessible, yet you'll have an account there with the intention to do overseas money change. in case you do it by potential of a monetary company and also you want the money promptly, make efficient you call first to be sure in the adventure that they have got GBP in inventory. in case you're waiting till you get to the united kingdom, i ought to characterize to both withdraw funds from an ATM or bypass to a placed up place of work. employing an ATM is accessible, yet you would possibly want to examine what your monetary company costs for global withdrawals. replacing funds at a placed up place of work is fairly accessible and they don't cost fee, so that you do not ought to pay any costs. I did some overseas money change there and it became really common and their charges were extremely strong. There are branches everywhere so that you're absolute to locate one someplace.

Usually the post office has some of the best rates. Also ATM rates are usually decent. NEVER exchange in the airport - the rates are horrific!
