What ar your views on the whole story of Donnie Darko?

It is my favourite film but me and 3 friends all disagree on the meaning behind it!!

My views are that it is to do with the space-time continuum!! All physics and science!! Whereas friends have argued about the religious aspect, he is having a mental dream and it didn't actually happen!!

Actually it's about multiple dimensions, time travel AND how that affects religion. Trying going to this website: http://metaphilm.com/philm.php?id=10_0_2_0

There is a great explaination on what time travel would mean to religion and how the former actually makes the first possible. If God made a clear plan for us, can't we jump to another time on that line since it's already there? Therefore, if we can time travel wouldn't that mean that there is a set plan for us all that we follow everyday and thereby proving that God exists? It's a pretty deep theory.

Please don't reduce Donnie Darko to your Christian rubbish. Of the many ways you could interpret the film, why choose Jesus as who Donnie represents? Jesus is quite possibly a hoax, plus there have been many other more worthwhile people to compare Donnie to if you were going to do so. Of course you are only saying Charita is an angel because she was wearing an angel costume in the talent show, how much dumber of an interpretation can you get. Donnie Darko is a great movie because of its mystique, it is not a puzzle that needs to be solved in order to be enjoyed.

Thats what makes Donnie Darko such a great movie, because everyone has a different take on the meaning of the film. Makes it a great movie for conversation. Watch the movie with the commentary on the DVD, it explains a lot.

I agree with you that it has to do with space/time continum; however, I can see where you friend that thinks it has religious/moral aspects because Donny does have the chance to see his future if he had left his house before the jet engine crashed in to his room and what his life would be life. After seeing his future, he decided to go back to his bed knowing that he is going to be be killed by the jet engine crashing into his room, sacrific himself as it will be a better world for other people if he does...if he died then, other would be spared later on, or at least that is what he believes will happen.

Donnie basically obeys Frank because Frank saved his life, when he told him to get up. The rest of the movie is in something called a tangent universe. It forms when the rest of the universe is going wrong, and it needs to be fixed. Donnie was able to do so. When people wake up, they're remembering their life in the tangent universe, and how they really are (ex: Jim and his porn ring).

I think there are a lot of ways you could interpertate the film.
One of mine is that he is Jesus Christ. It's hinted at after he leaves the movie theater from seeing Evil Dead. They were also showing 'The Last Temptation of Christ'. Donnie sacrifices himself. The kiddie porn guy doesn't get in trouble. Frank doesn't commit murder'. Donnie saves Gretchen. Donnie saves his mother and sister from crashing. I haven't seen it in awhile and I believe there were other reasons to back up the Jesus Christ thing. But he is a savior. Is Charita (chut up!) an angel?
