I'm about a week late for my periods, and I went to the doctor, who did a pregnancy test. It was negative, but she says there is still a large chance I could be pregnant anyway.

I have to go back next week for another test if I haven't had my period by then.

She wants me to take folic acid, and treat it as if I were pregnant. I find this kind of strange... She says there is a high chance that I am, as I have also been having abdominal pains, sore boobs etc.. for over 10 days now, but with no bleeding.

Do you think she is right? I'd love the answer to be "yes", but what do you think? I've been trying for 5 months now!

If you had a *blood* test that was negative it can mean one of 3 things: either you're not pregnant, your period was "late" but you *are* pregnant, or there's a problem.

Was there any stress in your life 3-5 weeks ago? This can sometimes delay ovulation. Menstruation is *never* late--it always follows ovulation by the same number of days: 12-16 for most women. But if you ovulated 10 days late, then your period *would have* been 10 days after you were expecting it. So...your period wouldn't now be a week late, but 3 days early. That could explain the negative pregnancy test.

A negative pregnancy test when you are pregnant could also be caused by an ectopic pregnancy. That's when an egg is fertilized, but it implants somewhere other than in the uterus (usually in the Fallopian tube). This needs to be detected as early as possible in order to avoid problems; it is easily treated, but can become life-threatening if it continues.

If you took a urine test, it is fairly common for it to be negative when you are pregnant. Waiting another week will probably give you accurate results, but if it *still* comes up negative, you may want to have a blood test. Some women (very few) are pregnant but don't have HCG (the hormone detected by pregnancy tests) "spill over" into their urine. In this case, a blood test is the only way to get an accurate reading on HCG in your system.

A blood test can detect pregnancy from about 8 days after ovulation (longer for some women); it takes at least about a week for the fertilized egg to get to the uterus to start implanting. Until implantation, it is *not* attached to your body in any way, so it is impossible to have *any* physical signs of pregnancy. Once it implants, it takes time to get enough HCG produced to be measurable. If you are, in fact, having signs of pregnancy, that would have been caused by the HCG, so a blood test will be accurate. For most women, the most sensitive urine tests can detect HCG in the urine about a day later.

As for the folic acid...it depends. Vitamins will only help you if you have a deficiency. Your body won't absorb more than it needs; if you *don't* need the folic acid, you'll have the healthiest toilet in town!! If you're not sure you have a healthy diet, then you might want to take it, but *also* improve your eating habits. There's one other consideration... If you've used hormonal birth control in the last year or two, you might want to take the folic acid anyway. Female hormones can really screw up your nutritional status, and folic acid is one that you are likely to be deficient in from the use of the hormones.

Good luck!!

Your doctor should have taken a blood test, instead of a urine test. I don't think your pregnant but, but I think she is putting you on folic acid because she knows your trying; and folic acid will give you all the vitamins, protein, minerals that your baby and you need in the future. Good Luck!

I would have the Dr take a blood test because w/a blood test they can tell from the 1st day u concieved. Yrs ago I took a hm pregnacy test and it came out neg we thought I had the flu, but the Dr took a blood test and came out positive and that's when he told me they can tell from the day u concieve. I wouldn't take a folic acid test unless necessary. Take the blood test it's worth it's a guarenteed answer.

With my second daughter I just KNEW I was pregnant. I took E.P.T. after E.P.T. and never got a positive result until finally my doctor did a blood test that came up positive. Sometimes in early pregnancy the hormone that is detected by E.P.T.s is so low that they don't pick them up. Chances are still pretty good that you are pregnant. Good Luck!

No freakin' way! Tests these days (even over the counter tests) are so sophisticated, they can tell if you're pregnant before your nxt menstrual period.
