My question is what do people from the U.S. think of the fact that China's economy will soon overtake the U.S. economy? I mean Europe's already has, but they are a union of many countries, what about when a united China surpasses you? What are your general opinions? Will you care?
Also this isnt a debate about how good America is, or whether this will happen so please dont bother saying anything about that. I just want an answer to my question.

I am an American living in China and I have no doubt that she will overtake and surpass the US within a few years (the CIA predicts 15 but I think they are over optimistic). With the staunch leadership and the general morale of China, I believe it will be a good thing. The leaders here are progressive and everyone has strong work ethics...most workers do their regular job 9-5 and then spend a few hours doing a bit more...even on week-ends. Progress and self improvement are on everyones' minds and many engineers, teachers and doctors spend time studying. The competition at schools is fierce so that they can get a place at the best Universities. While Chinese are not paid at the same high rate as Americans, many families are striving to buy a car. I admire Deng Xiao Peng and President Hu JinTao for leading this country into today's world. There are still problems but everyones' lives have improved and advanced at a very fast pace.

It's the per-capita GDP that counts in terms of quality of life; and right now China is catching up with Honduras, not the US. I wish the Chinese people well, but I don't necessarily buy the hype. The coastal cities are booming, but in a lot of the interior areas the poverty is the same as it ever was.

I remember in the 1980s when the Japanese were going to buy the whole world, Japanese management is superior, Japanese outwork everyone, Japanese corporations are only concerned with the long term, etc. etc....blah..blah blah. Then Japan spent the 1990s mired in a recession
they have never recovered from. I know hubris when I see it.

I don't know the exact facts, but the U. S. economy is still better than the EU's. Also, the problem with China is that millions are oppressed. They are plundered to provide a better life for the middle-upper class. This won't lead to a strong economy if they don't change this policy.

Yes, we Americans are like Alice in Wonderland, living on illusions. Our greatness is a thing of the past, just waiting for barbarian hordes to send it to oblivion. China will provide the hordes to do the job, whenever she is ready.

ITS not hard when you consider the amount of retail goods manufactured in china that are sold world wide and here in the states.
WE gave them coke and pepsi McDonalds and KFC .
WE should be selling them american standard ,thats toilets cause they crap in a hole and have the worst bathroom facility's in the world.
GUESS what we got in return JEANS made from the worst materials and shirts and shoes and all those toys that are marketed with fast food to make america fat.
JUNK JUNK JUNK and more JUNK comes in from china and americans buy it .
IF its on the shelfs at wal-mart you can bet it was made in china except for the food .
IF it has steal in it , the steal now comes from china ,steal workers in the united states worked hard in conditions most americans would not from the miners to the smelters to the buildings and paid well with good unions and benefits but a strong america was not what corps wanted .THEY systematiclly broke the unions .SO the hard working men and women of america no longer have the means to work hard and earn an honest living.
UNLESS you spend your life working for uncle sam in america you have no garuntee that you will have benefits or health care or job security.
NOW i do not know about americans anymore we use to make things of value besides smart bombs and weapons.
TODAY over 1/3 of americans make there living directly of the revenues collected from taxes redistributed up to defense workers teachers police and a government that feels safe by providing the jobs for americans .
THAT is if you like making guns bombs ships planes and boys intomen so they can be used in the wars america now depends on for its paycheck.
WE are going further in debt as a nation and we now have the largest population of children living in poverty or with there hard working retired grandparents who had good jobs or who's parent's had good jobs building america.WITH materials made in america what has happened to this nation .BIG government has sold us out and still wants more . the land under your feet is now being assaulted .WE now have the reverse mortgage which gives your dad and mom the money to live on as utilities rise and health care increases they offer to help by buying the home out from under them so you no longer have an inheritance of land and housing ,you have to buy new and pay intrest instead of just the taxes which have risen dramaticaly over the past 2 decades along with the valueof the property so the government can collect even more taxes .WE as americans have missed what is going on .IT is not just china that affects america it is the way we earn a living and war and intrest on money is what wiped the romans and greeks out .
BY the way we will default on our loans to china should she try to squeez america .
