Ancient Japanese traditions like samurai had affected Japan enormously until today. Japanese are disciplined because of the regimented life of the samurai. They are brave in war because of the samurais and they could even sacrifice their lives just like what they did in World War II when pilots intentionally crashed their planes to US aircraft carriers.

Japan is fairly unique in the modern world in that it idolizes and reveres its medieval archetypes to such a large degree. The Samurai is still an ideal of loyalty, obedience, selfless devotion, skill, dedication and all of that.
This has led to some interesting issues in the modern day, because this ideal, in addition to those (to Americans) admirable qualities, Samurai were also soul-less, lethal, vicious, arrogant, mindless and murderous.
And yet they remain an ideal to many Japanese!
This kind of (again, to Western eyes) split personality in their culture can be very disturbing, and can lead to some real problems in trying to deal with them. For instance, consider the international fallout when Geo. Bush (aka Daddy Bush) barfed in the PM's lap at a state dinner ... that was a disaster that was only little short of complete because it was so darned funny.
The Japanese culture has many holdover icons from its medieval heritage (not just the Samurai), in part because it remained a medieval culture until so comparatively recently ... there were still Samurai strolling around in robes with swords as late as the late 1800s!
Many of these holdovers are less than admirable: the treatment of women, the class structure, the lack of individuality ... but in the end, they have proven "workable" for the Japanese, allowing extreme focus among the populace, great social stability and discipline, and the ability of what is still a comparatively small nation to take such a huge leading role in international economic and political affairs.
I hope the helps.

Rigorous discipline and adherence to the laws implemented during the time of the Shogunate and were practiced by the samurais were carried on by modern-day Japan after rising from the ashes of several wars and nuclear bombs. Such medieval traits and nationalistic fervour of the Japanese have been inherent in today's Japan and have considerably propeled them to become a world power. The key word to this nation's progress is: Discipline
