It used to work until recently, and I've now done a clean install of windows XP professional, but it still keeps happening. It will play for about 10 secs, then pc reboots. I have a AMD64 3500, 1GB Crucial DDR, Geforce6800 Pro, Soundblaster live 5.1 soundcard, western digital 250GB hard drive, and Acer 19" monitor

Well a lot of those suggestions are good. However, they always used to play, and I still have 2 region changes left so it's not that. It affects any dvd, so has nothing to do with scratches or protected content. I doubt its the power supply as i have 1 500Watt one, and as i said, the dvds used to play.

If it reboots on EVERY attempt, then the drive itself might be the problem. Here's what I would try:

1) Cheapest thing to replace first is the IDE cable. Make sure the drive is positioned on the end of the cable if it's the master device or on the middle connector if it's the slave (for best performance, though not always required).

2) Since you've done a clean install, you can bet it's not something set wrong in Windows. Therefore, you might want to try moving the device into a different position on the IDE cable. For example, if it was master, try setting it as slave to another master device. Or, if it's on the primary IDE channel, try moving it to the other IDE channel. Try it on the channel by itself as master.

3) Replace the drive. DVD-ROMs are dirt cheap running less than $20 in some cases. You can find a decent DVD burner for less than $50 at:

sounds to me like a sofware problem. Could also be that the DVD has corrupted content that reboots your computer, try a different DVD. It could also be the firmware of your DVD drive that has problems with another harware on your system and you need to update it. Find the manufacturer of your drive an check their web site for any firware update, or driver updates.

Open your computer and make sure everything is set properly, and that all cables are properly connected.
Check that your fan is clean and working.
Check that your power supply is strong enough to handle all your hardware and software requirements.
