The US was involved in World War II when the Pearl Harbor was bombed by the Japanese on December 8, 1941. The war ended in 1945 and it was the start of the Cold War because after the war, US and Russia held on to the territories they occupied or influenced said areas. Afterwhich, the US and Russia made alliances with other countries to contend who was the real superpower. Though nothing happened between them eversince, thus the war was cold. It ended when the great Union of Soviet Socialist Republics collapsed lately with the US remaining as the only superpower.

Find an interesting fact about the particular event that helps you remember facts. Knowing that Gen. P.G.T. Beauregard, commanding the Confederate forces around Ft. Sumter was the protege of Major Richard Anderson, while Anderson was an Artillery Instructor at West Point and that Anderson was in command of the Union forces inside Sumter when the Confederates began the shelling, helped me remember more facts about that incident.
There's got to be things out there that make the dates you need to remember interesting. Good luck locating them.

Now, heres a good way to learn dates and such. Write down the most essentials. What you really need to know. Hang this list in the loo. Every time you pee (...).... you read it. When you feel you know the stuff, you can change the list, or reduce amount of facts - but just for a while. Take it back in a week or so if you really want information to stick.
This repeating will put information inside your head for sure. (Im not sure it will help you understand more, but it sure will make you remember well...)...
Good luck

try learning the sequence of events then add dates after you master the sequence, I'm not sure the dates really mater since most of the time you can look them up but the events would be worth remembering

I would suggest that you search thru Amazon for a book called 'The Almanac of American History'. It's put together like a timeline of american history. I have it and it's just an excellent resource.
