It's simple - the media builds it all up saying we're the "greatest team since 1966" etc etc. And a lot of people believe it. And they still believe it even if they've watched a whole series of games where England have played poorly. And when they inevitably lose, the fans blame someone or something else. The referees, and all of FIFA are always wrong, and the bloke down the pub watching it on the telly is right.

Basically, it's like when someone keeps telling you "Buy this car - it's the best in the world - it's so quick. Faster than anything else" - then you go out in it and feel very proud. Next you get overtaken by and old coot in a Reliant Robin - then the truth sets in. You've been had.

All the teams are like that. Corruption does exist in football, I'm convinced of it since 5 diallowed goals against South Korea in 2002. This gives other teams now license to whine, though in all fairness England didn't have enough creativity or fitness to get to the finals in a fair way either. The Dutch complained similarly, not about their own poor display of course. The French are complaining now too, and if France had won the final, the Italians would've been angry at the dubious penalty Henry received. FIFA should only employ refs at the World Cup that have proven themselves worthy and stress-tolerant - while team managers and commentators should think twice before shouting at the ref. Then maybe the disappointed fans can think again too.

We usually have a right to complain. 1986 - Marradonna's hand of God, 1998, ref sends of Beckham for making bootlace contact with Simeone, when Simeone had fouled him quite deliberately and had no punishment and then in the same game a perfectly good goal gets disallowed, 2004 Rooney gets clattered so hard his foot is broken, Portugal continue unpunished - and another disallowed goal with no apparant reason, 2006 Rooney is baited by his supposed team mate, fouled by two defendeing players, stumbles backwards and gets sent off, not for his pushing Ronaldo - who was only hanging around to wind Rooney up more - but for stamping on the player he was falling over.

Putting it into context, many other players get away with a whole load of cheating, but we suffer our own honesty. We don't roll around on the floor when somebody makes minimal contact and so get surprised when others do.

Of the four teams who reached the semi finals of this year's world cup, only one team had got there without using underhand methods (Germany). France had a free kick against Spain, from which they scored, after Henry ran into Puyol's back then fell and made out he'd been hit in the face by Puyol - who Henry had baited all game presumably still unable to handle that Barca outclassed him and his Arsenal outfit in the Champion's league final, Portugal I think we've covered, Italy had a penalty for a last minute superman style dive against Australia.

It's not just England who suffer; Sweden, Australia, Japan, South Korea and Germany have all had recent injustices in big tournaments against Southern European and South American opponents and Turkey.

Many of the fans' complaints are against their own players in the aftermath of penalty shoot outs, at which we openly admit we suck.

England are not bad losers, we shake hands at the end of even the most disappointing games (even when the oposition are yelling obscenities at our players when they're conducting a TV interview like in 2002). Yes we lay the blame on external factors a little more than we should and yes our performances have sometimes been lacking and yes, perhaps we shouldn't be so surprised when certain other teams play a certain way. But we don't fight the oppostion, or petition FIFA like certain other teams, it's our own press who make all the noise, not the players. We have some of the most talented players in the world, but they don't get to play their best stuff under the circumstances.

The problem is that each time something like this happens, it adds to the sense of injustice and overall frustration, because the game should be decided on who plays best on the day, not who gets lucky, or gets away with cheating. Of course people are going to sound off about it, because it is unfair. That doesn't mean you're a bad loser - we freely admit that the tactics and performances were bad this year, but it doesn't change the fact that we were ultimately undone by underhand methods.

The players, themselves, have admitted that they did not perform, so I'm not really sure why you get the impression they don't lose well. Well, actually, I am sure - you probably read it in the Sun or the Daily Mail.

And finally, we invented the game, so maybe other teams should be made to play it our way - with some bottle, rather than temper tantrums and amateur dramatics!

I take it you're Scottish, by the way...you must be old if you remember what a world cup competition looks like....Or American, in which case you're probably still trying to understand why there are other countries in a world cup.

This world cup will be remembered for cheating, diappointing performances from the most talented players and crappy refereeing (yes, including the Englishman, Graham Poll and his three yellow card trick) and it's such a shame. The players there this year could have put on a real show; English, Brazillian, Argentine and many more. The only ones who really put the effort in were Australia and S. Korea, who didn't have a hope in hell, and the hosts, Germany.

They are a bunch of overrated and overpaid players...
more of glamour icons than sportsmen...

and lastly...have a very biased opinion regarding their team.

Throughout the tournament there was no hint of england challenging any big team...infact they merely scrambled to victory with a thin margin every single time.
Each big team had an autocratic occasion atleast once...

Spain thrashing the Ukraine
Argentina thrashing the serbs
etc etc

But not england!

one cry-baby team they have!
and ofcourse a pathetic manager with a pathetic personality!

to top it off....the current england side was dubbed as the best that came after a long long time!

ha ha ha..is watwe shud all do in chorus! :))

You're the misled one, mate! England have shown to lose with dignity whenever their opponent was a better team and that they won outright without the cheating, controversies etc.

Did you see England behaving like Argentines after they lost out to Germany? When England lost to Brazil in 2002 WC, they certainly didn't whinge. No need to mention names, it's obvious some countries are habitual cheats because it's in their blood.

Because we STILL think we are the best eventhough the results since 1966 prove otherwise. It is also true that a few times we have been cheated out of progressing further but on the whole we are still smarting over having no more colonies.!!!!!!!!!!!1

this is because in the last few tournaments we have been hard done by! Look at dissalowed goals in france 98 and portugal in 04 from campbell, both should of stood but referees know they will gain fame from being prejudice against the english, as for ronaldo he is just a cheat!

we did loose with dignity, we just dont like to be cheated, in one match figo head butted a guy and got a yellow card, rooney cant move so has to stamp on the guy and gets sent off. then we take a pen and score then made to re-take it again, why was that? so its not about sour grapes it just about the injustice of it all which was plain to see by all.
