hi,
I have faced same problem for my mobile.First of all you check you r mp3 player connecting to other machine. if it is giving same error then sorry your player's usb is not functioning.if it working on other PC then your machine have problem on usb port. check if any other device it is detecting or not if it is detecting other device then surely players usb is not functioning. there is no problem with driver as it is needed when OS detect and ask for the driver.

What you need to do is install the BIOS Host controllers. It should be in your Motherboard Drivers CD. If you don't have the CD, u can get the driver's from the Motherboard Maker's site. Make sure u search the right driver's for your motherboard's model. Usually this happens in some brand desktop models (Dell, HP, IBM). If that don't work, there might be a chance that the USB jumpers on the motherboard might be set incorrectly. For that u need to open your desktop & use the motherboard's manual to locate the USB jumpers. It's definetly not your MP3 player. If it works on 1 PC, it should work in other PC's. Hope I answer your question!

You might need to install drivers for your MP3 Player. Either use the software CD that came with your player, or look for them online.
Install the drivers, and Windows should recognise your USB device.

I think win XP is not recognising your Mp3 player because you might have not INSTALL the proper drivers then again it could be that USB connector could be damaged
Get proper DRIVERS or change the USB connector.
