If someone is depressed and you serioiusly think that they are also wallowing in self pity - I think the best thing to do is to ignore it and leave them to it. What do you think? I don't think its a good idea to molly coddle them - they have to deal with it and come out the other end themself. Some times a good kick (reality check) is needed??

And yes, I can be bothered but there comes a time when all the strong support in the world and comfort just doesn't help anymore.

I hope you never suffer with depression,
It is a serious illness
People with it need help Do not ignore them ,
Thats turning your BACK on them,

Thats what you are saying to us turn our backs on them.
Well I suffered this from 1990
My SISTER has gone to HELL and BACK BECAUSE of ME
I THANK THE LORD I HAVE MY SISTER
For she has always been there for me,
I still get panic attacks and other things,
But I am a lot better than I was
BECAUSE I HAD SOMEONE TO HELP ME

So I am asking you to think
What if it was you
would you want people to turn their backs on you IGNORE YOU.
Or would you like some one to be there for you

I tend to (mentally) kick that person's *ss.
Most of the times I can't take that wallowing in self pity and I get cynical. If that doesn't help, I just walk away.

Try to keep them busy so they have less time to wallow. Perhaps take them for lunch, shopping or to the cinema?
Don't push them to talk, but spending time with them might help and give them the opportunity to open up.
Try not to comment until you have walked in their shoes and know exactly how they are feeling. We all have low moments and sometimes it's not easy to get out of them though having good friends can help loads.

Youve got a good idea. you dont want them to wallow in their self pity. just be careful not to be too cruel Theres a difference between supporting and enabling someone

Well depression is a serious illness,which some people dont understand. it takes time medication and understanding people. lets hope you never suffer from it and someone turns round to you and says you just need a kick up the ****.

No, if they are really depressed they need medical help from a psychiatrist. They need the medicine to keep the depression away. It is not as simple as it seems. Even general practitioners can't handle it. Read up on depression.

You're right regarding self pity, if it's depression, they need proper help and a kick ain't gonna help, and may make them worse.

depression is a serious illness and needs medical attention maybe counceling, you cannot expect someone to snap out of it, and do not need molly coddling, just profesional help.

good question, make sure you know what your doing first it may be self pity then tell them to grow up snap out of it.
but if its depression then be careful best is to get them see a doctor who can diagnose this.

Maybe if they're doing it for attention, but if you have any suspicion whatsoever that the person may harm themself, you need to get help immediately for them!
