I have been with a very domineering company for 9 years. I question a lot of their policies. I was told by a past boss,"The company has gone to the trouble to put on this luncheon for you and you WILL participate!" Since then, I refuse to participate in any activity(lunches, baby showers, birthday parties) that is not mandatory. I won't quit, the pay and benefits are good. Am I wrong to feel this way?

What a screwed up boss. I could always tell when it was in my best interests to go to a company function because my boss or the executive management would always say "employees are STRONGLY encouraged to attend." That was my cue because you see there is such a thing as politics, and you can't get around it. If you want to advance your career you have to know when it is politically correct to show your face at these functions and smile until it hurts. I have learned the fine art of showing up, moving about the room, sampling the food and making a quick exit. All they remember is that they saw you there and you're good to go.

Hey, I want to tell you something.
When you work for a Company, you are Employed 24 hours per day.
If your Company wants you to participate in things like parties etc, DO IT.
If you do not do this, you ARE going to find yourself on the out side looking in...
The Company might even find a less rewarding job for you and you might then be forced to quit, or the job will then be terminated.
We had a person similar to what you are doing and the President of the company created another department and put the employee that was not doing as he wanted in charge of this department.
After about 6 or 7 months, the Company dissolved the department and the person was on the outside looking in.

Is the time that you have to spend in a party worth more than your Job ? You had better get all of your facts down in writing and maybe then, if you do have to leave, you might get a settlement, but, doubtful.

Well companies dont have to do a thing for you. If they decide to do something is out of their own will, and if you were told that the companby went to the trouble to put the lounchen together it was probably because you must of said something rude and in reality it was true. Not all companies can give you extravagant meals or parties (like the ones you see on tv or movies) they do it to thank you for your work as an employee and the best you can do is keep quiet and enjoy.

you dont have to feel bad about it. youre an employee but still a free person. anything beyond the scope of work is your own decision, by all means you are protected under labor law. so go ahead and dont attend and keep doing your job. if they fire because of that you can sue them and become a millionaire!!!!! cheers!!!
