When he's watching Brad, he appears to be looking to his idol, to someone he admires. He looks a like a cute, young man. When he SINGS, he looks like a seasoned performer, a guy who's seen a bit of life. His persona changes drastically. It is very interesting.

I wouldn't say he looks out of place....he looks like he's as in love with Brad Paisley as all of us are.
