The situation is : my niece by marriage has a sister that doesn't want to raise her 2-year-old, so they've asked us to step in as guardians. Has anyone in California been through this? I just want to know what to expect, the procedures of filing for guardianship, California laws, possible problems, etc.

get legal advice! Find out what your options are. Call a lawyer with your question and talk for as long as you need to to get your question answered. Then call back when you have another question. Find out what you need to do and when and how. It is only $17 a month in my state, yours may be more.

You just need an attorney to draw up the documents and you all sign. Unless Children's Protective Services or the father is involved you won't have a problem. The father has to sign off his rights if he hasn't already. Also don't forget Medical Power of Attorney.
