This is something to set up in your router's settings. Connect to it, and look for wireless settings.

Check your encryption settings. If you want secure wireless connection, make sure you turn your encryption on. Make a note of the settings and password.

It could be that your flatmate's computer is set up with the old encryption settings before you've reset the router. Maybe this is why your flatmate could not get on the network via the wireless connection. Since your PC had a reinstall, presumably your security settings had been put back to default, the same as the router.

Having set the encryption settings on the router, go and do the same with all the computers that need wireless connection to the router.

You should be able to log on to the wireless router's configuration settings using your browser - details in the manual if you have it.
Or type 192.168.1.1 in your browser and click enter - it might get you there!

Is the SSID being broadcast? If not, then you will need to add the SSID of your router to the list of available networks in network properties. Then the router will show up for your friend to connect to.

Are you using WEP or WPA security? Don't use an open network.

if you are using a software to manage your wireless connection and to connect to the wireless network, try doing it using windows(use the wireless connection setup wizard and make sure you set the security level during this process). When you are connected and the icon for an active wireless connection shows on your taskbar, then right click on it and select OPEN NETWORK CONNECTIONS. Then right click the connection from the list of connections displayed in the window and check the properties. make sure the connection is firewalled.

try resetting the wireless router (reset button where it defaults to the default password and configuration) and making a new password and settings it sounds like your passwords have become corrupted and the router is not allowing you access.
