No, it doesn't mean Italians are racist it means the national football team of Italy is racist. this isn't the first Materazzi did something racist to a player. And no Zidane didn't deserve the insluting racist comment. And Materazzi deserved the head butt.

You will find, as you go through life, that just about half the people in every country are racist! And sometimes, you will find that even more of a percentage will be racist in certain countries! Racism exists on all levels; poor, rich, middle class, and although we try so hard to not be, circumstances happen, things occur, that cause that thinking to keep happening.
As for Materazzi and his supposed comments....I've read the reports that so-called "lip readers" say he said this, and said that. It doesn't really matter what he said, if anything....and I do mean "IF"....we don't know what happened, or what was said. And Zidane will supposedly be telling the world what he alledgedly heard in a few days....problem is....will he be telling the truth? Or will he be exaggerating Materazzi's comments/slurs/insults to emphasize his head butt as being defensive AND justified for what was said about his family, country, race, religion? Materazzi could have simply been telling him he plays like a girl....again...will we ever know the truth? Zidane was given a red card because a referee SAW him head butt Materazzi, NOT because of replays, or what was caught on camera but not shown to the audience. And even if provoked....he should have walked away, and let things go, and filed a formal complaint after the match was over. He's a man, not a boy...and with age, supposedly comes temperment, and the ability to walk away from confrontations. For me....I would have admired him quite a bit more if he'd done just that. As it is...what he got, was what he deserved. And if you think about it....what a really sad way to end a career of such extraordinary talent!

NOBODY deserves to be abused racially. I hope everybody can stick to their first opinion. You shouldn't attack a person you wanted to defend just because someone attacked you. If someone insults you or your country, then it's their problem, don't change your way of speaking. You'll end up saying something bad about the person you actually wanted to defend.
And what Materazzi did was wrong and unfair to Zidane, himself, his teammates and his country. Because he said that, some people badmouth Italians, some say Italy didn't deserve the cup, it's unfair to the Italian team because they deserved to win.
Mazerazzi should change his attitude, it's okay if you're a racist, but when your racism hurts other people, there's a problem. He's a sportsman, and this should not come from a proper decent sportsman that supports fairplay and true sporting spirit.

WOW such ignorance.. calling all Italians racist based on the actions of one person, your not to bright are you...
What Materazzi said was wrong and should not have been said but zidane was also wrong for acting out on those word.
Next time someone insults you beat them up and use that as your defense in court and see what happens
To poster London girl this is not the first time zidane assaulted someone, he does have a temper
Again the actions of one Italian does not represent all Italians but since you are ignorant you'll never see that

I live in Turin, former Winter Olympics host city, in a suburb made in main part from Arabs. When Italy won we all were dancing and singing in the streets, with happiness, friendship, our Italian flags...
Zidane - as well as Henry, Vieira, Thuram, Trezeguet - played in our city, in Juventus FC, many years.
Turin and the whole Italy aren't racist.
You correctly report Sen. Calderoli (I fully dislike his party, words, and behavior) comment, they were harsh words and I want to avoid any translation.
Calderoli is a member of 'Lega Nord' (North League) party, well known for its racist and xenophobic views. They had got a 4,5% vote in the last Italian Parliament Election (April 2006).
This party has the same behavior of National Front (Front National) lead from the FRENCH Jean-Marie Le Pen. I need to remember Le Pen WON over the Socialist Party candidate and Prime Minister Lionel Jospin in the first round of France's presidential elections in 2002, gaining 16,86%.
Again, I guess Y-answer is a friendship place and doesn't deserve dirty words, so I will avoid to report any Le Pen harsh talking, but this one: "In June 2006, he claimed that the French World Cup squad contained too many coloured players, and was not an accurate reflection of French society".
Haider in Austria share some of those behaviors, and the full list could be really long and pointless...
Need only to say:
Italians AREN'T racist people.
Before talking, think twice.
Calling the other as racist is the right way to spread hate and racism. Especially when starting from a football match, without evidence, proof, sources.

Quite honestly, it doesn’t really matter what was said, an insult is an insult and it’s a sad reflection on society when any abuse (verbal or physical) is an accepted part of the sport - or any part of our lives. We need to learn to respect one another as human beings before we can seriously call ourselves a civilized society.
