Think about how we understand our world--through words. Those who understand more words understand more concepts. Those who understand more concepts make more connections as they think about the things that happen in their lives or in the news, etc. These individuals do better in school and on the job. They have more choices due their increased vocabulary. Lee Iacocca, former Chrysler automotive CEO, said one of the greatest single indicators of our financial success is related to the strength of our vocabulary. I believe he is correct. The more words we know the more choices we have about the world we live in. So you want to make sure that freshman in high school is increasing his or her vocabulary. One of the best ways that student can do that is through reading, reading, and more reading. If books bore the student, then encourage him or her to read magazines, the Internet, cereal boxes, etc. Another way to enhance vocabulary development is to take a foreign language. If the student's first language is English, it would be best to start with a romance language, but any additional language is better than only one language. In addition, knowing a language helps us understand different cultures, which again gives us more opportunities to find success. Play with words--have fun and reap the rewards of your knowledge

Verbal skills are one of the essential basic skills for a person to function efficiently in a society. In the US, the standard is of course English verbal skills. However with the great number of immigrants at our schools, the average high school freshman level of English verbal skills probably falls short compared to other countries like say Chinese 9th graders in Chinese-Mandarin.

Not only that, the parenting in the US has declined in quality such that the parents themselves do not reinforce the value for good verbal skills. In many cases, the parents themselves do not apply proper standard English verbal skills to set as an example for the kids. As a result, the US curriculum continues to be modified or as some educators will say "dumbed down". And as speculation on my part, I contend that this results in more miscommunication in the society causing more conflicts. Maybe the rise in violence in the US is one of the symptoms of lower verbal ability of the public.
