I've heard that exercising during is actually beneficial for people who get cramps...but i've also heard that aerobic activity is not advised. So...what's the verdict?

There's no problem with aerobics during a period. I do it all the time. You can have a problem if you do heavy weights (like leg presses) and bleed more, but aerobics won't harm you.

You can work out on your period. Whatever is comfortable to you, then do it. People have there own comfort zones. So go with yours.
