I've just switched it off and restarted it, it seems to be the modem making the noise any suggestions?

Could be your hard drive. Mine went out of my laptop a few years ago. Would start up okay then start making a loud screeching noise. Once it started I couldn't do anything on it. Lost all my data and had to buy a new hard drive. Hope it isn't that.

is your modem a broadband or dialup modem, Does the screeching sound like a modem trying to connect or is it like a high pitched whine.
fans are usually the source of noise in a pc. check the power supply fan on the back of your pc.

Not an expert but it might be a hard drive problem. The same thing happened to my laptop. I had to get another hard drive, if that is the case as soon as you get a chance, back up your important info.
Consult with a local PC repair shop.

You may have some link in Startup folder, go to Start > All Programs > Startup and delete any thing you feel like it is responsible for that.

If it boots up then its not your hard drive. Its either the cooling fan on the processor or the cooling fan on the power supply.
