They don't!! Babies are born with an *instinctive* smile. They don't smile because they *want* to; they smile automatically when they are content. A baby with gas (wind) will scowl or grimace (just like anyone else would!!). It's just an old wive's tale.

Very early on is probably just a muscle response but when they reach 1 or 2 months old is when I call it the "sleep grins" of contentment. Once they are alert and watching you intently, those are what I call "social" smiles. HTH

I think its just an old wives tale.

Newborns do smile but its just a natural content thing. You'll get your first proper reactive smiles at about 6 weeks.

i heard an answer to this question not long ago. apparently when they have wind they fluff and the feeling makes them smile. it was on baby uk
