I am a wanna be film maker/video editor graphic artist etc... on a budget. Will the dell 1705 or the mac ibook meet my needs? the i book appears to have the software but it of course does not have final cut and i can't afford the g5...can i add final cut later to ibook + i am not sure how much memory i really should have getting started...should i be looking at a desktop?instead?

for u'r application & budget limitations, i would suggest a desktop

not very much of chip chop u can do with a notebook, whereas u have all the possibilities in a desktop to add components later as when u save.

try the dell xps 400 line of desktops
a 256 mb video card
a 2 gb ddr2 ram, preferably in one slot
- so that u add another 2 gb later
here's perfect one 4 u

best part is os is win xp media centre 2005 & not win xp home/pro, unless u absolutely need a professional version

I guess it depends on what level of film/video your aiming at, Mac OS X comes bundled with some great video editing software (iMovie, iDVD), i'm not sure what Windows XP offers out of the box though. For high-end editing you will need a lot of memory and disk space (Terrabytes almost).

I myself am a Graphic Artist and firmly believe that you should use the correct tools for the job, in my case this is a G5 with Dual Processor. A PC just wouldn't cut it i'm afraid.

for a graphic artist on a budget, i really think you should rather get a desktop, when you have a desktop pc, you'll have plenty of room for future upgrades, an AMD based computer is what's for you atleast a 3500+ athlon, all you have to have is a good graphic card with atleast 256mb of v-ram.

im a graphic artist/webdesigner myself and on a tight budget too, here's what i have set-up for my work:

Processor: AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+
Memory: 2gb DDR RAM
Video: ATI All-In-Wonder Radeon X1900 256MB
[w/ this card u get a graphic adapter/tv tuner for $250]
Storage: 2x 160gb HDD
Keyboard/Mouse: Logitech Multimedia Keyboard/Mouse
Monitor: Acer 19" LCD Monitor
Optical Drives: Gigabyte DVD ROM
Gigabyte DVD-RW

u c, its not as pricey as the G5 but it works almost the same

Yes Desk-top is much better for what you wish to do. Graphics's and film editing require more RAM (Random Access Memory). More RAM you have on your system faster it will be to work with this type of work.
