I have had many great experiences here.
The people are friendly. Transportation is simple. The sites are incredible. The nature is beautiful.
I have been in Japan for over 2 years. When I first moved here, I didn't know anyone and I didn't know any Japanese. The first few months were just tough. Nothing imparticular that I would say is a bad experience.
Advice.....Come with an open mind. Have fun! Plan ahead, bring some books and maps along, and don't be afraid to ask questions. Learn some Japanese phrases before you come. Bring your passport and always carry the phone number and address of the place where you are staying.

apparently some aspects of Japanese culture can be disconserting for women - but as a man, I had nothing but good times.
people are very polite, transport's clean and efficient, things are not nearly as expensive as I was led to believe (that being said I pretty much stayed out of Tokyo)
my advice - make sure you go to Kyoto, if nothing else... it is by far one of the most beautiful, fascinating, treasures on the planet. It is considered a UNESCO world heritage site, there are literally thousands of shrines and temples and cobblestoned streets with secret gardens and traditional buildings. IMO it is THE quintessential Japanese experience.
one other pc of advice. Leran some rudimentary Japanese. I found most people actually speak some English but are shy and reserved to do so in front of foreigners. However, as soon as I tried to speak some Japanese (in a flailing kind of way) they were much more friendly, appreciative and understanding and willing to speak their limited English (presumably in light of my pathetic attmpts at their language)
Go with an open mind and a polite demeanor and I am sure you will have an amazing time!

I lived there for four years. I really enjoyed it. Most everything I experienced there was a good experience. The noise in the city waking me up early in the morning was my worst complaint, but I'd move back in a second and put up with it again. There's always something to do in Japan....Especially the big cities. I lived in Yokosuka (not SO big) and there was always enough to keep me busy. Just don't be afraid to try new things and keep an open mind and enjoy!

ooh- i stayed in the Hyatt in Tokyo too! although i think its called the Century Hyatt, but whatever... anyways, Tokyo is really nice. Clean, lots of things to see, people are very polite, great food (if youre sick of raw fish, try udon or soba noodles and yakitori). Oh, if you're going to visit there, bring a full wallet: everything is $$$$$$$$!! Still, its definitely a great experience. I wanna go again...

first of all, you have to stop with this "wat r ur" etc. stuff. is it really that hard to type an extra 2 letters? well, japan is way cool. i went to tokyo, specifcally roppongi hills. but you have to be kind of open minded to go to japan. like a lot of people i know would be kind of freaked out by japanese culture and stuff. ( i live in southern california). the grand hyatt tokyo down there is really nice.
