Two: to have an available fund from which expenditures can be made, and to build a credit record. (Other responders have alluded to both of these.) Use the card from time to time, and always pay your credit card bill promptly and in full. (The interest rates charged if you pay less than the full amount are ruinous.) This will help build you a track record, so that when you want to borrow money (as to buy a house), the lenders will have some confidence that they will get their payments on time.

Flexibility in cash flow management. Emergency source of money. Win points and free gifts. Useful for on line purchases ( tickets especially save a lot of hassel and time).
You have to be very diciplined in using a credit card. If you always clear your bills completely, and not get into the trap of 'minimum payment', you are safe, and it is very very useful.

ppl say to build your credit score, that's only in the U.S., we are the only country that does something like this, i believe it's mainly to test ppl's trustworthiness, if you barrow then pay it back everytime, company's and ppl believe you can be trusted. also it's just another form of control, if we use credit cards for everything, then we leave a paper trail that can be traced

keep one card with a high limit... just in case of an emergency. credit cards are bad... seriously bad. if you get rid of all the extra ones... if you need credit for something in the future... you can always apply again.
