They are together in that picture
So the smile said not a beauty but intelligent smile

In his time, Da Vinci (like all the other artisians of the day) depended upon either sponsors or commission work just to make ends meet, let alone buy supplies so they could continue to pursue their artistic expression.
The Mona Lisa was a commissoned portrait for a client. Nothing more.

That he was a bit of a prankster. Some, believe it is a self portrait of himself, to look like a woman.
The sheepish grin, indicates.."GOTCHA!"

I saw this on PBS a LONG time before we ever heard of the Da Vinci code.
When they layed HIS face on top of Mona Lisa's...by using a computer, the faces and all the tiniest of facial features matched up perfectly.

They said he used a mirror to paint his face and added the rest very easily.

They think it was just another one of his pranks.

the mona lisa is a nearly perfect example of the sfumato style of painting which leonardo may have invented and was the greatest master of.

in sfumato ('foggy') painting the image appears solid, but the closer you look the more indistinct lines and even colours become.

like all serious artists leonardo was more interested in art than almost anything else. he valued the mona lisa above all his other pieces because it was a great painting - not because it had a hidden message.

people who don't understand art don't understand leonardo.
