In Alaska, the supermarket has it. As do all hardware and sporting goods stores.
The unbiased assessments I've seen (PhD bear researchers, not gun or pepper spray manufacturers) suggest you stand a better chance of survival with pepper spray than with a gun, regarding grizzly bears.
Note that FAR more effective, unquivocalively, is to make a lot of noise and travel in a group (which makes a lot of noise).
Do NOT take it on a plane.
The coolest "source" I've seen was a car rental place in Cordova, AK. You have to fly in and out so they have a drawer full of butane lighters, stove fuel, DEET, etc. Borrow it when you arrive, leave when you go. Free.
All three grizzlies I saw last month ignored me or huffed, turned and ran - just like they're supposed to.
One person a year dies of a bear attack somewhere in the US, on average. And it is national news. 100s die of being stupid out of doors,10,000s die in auto accidents, and 100,000s die of cardiac events. And only the local paper carries the obit. This is what statistians call a "sampling error".
A weaponless hiker who plans to stay that way,

You can get it at Walmart, Walgreen's, Rite-Aid, Kmart, Gi-Joes...if it's legal in your state.
If you are hiking anywhere there are Bears or Cougars it's a real good idea to have it as a last resort...cause if you're that close your gonna get bit...but it will make them disengage.
If you are hiking in the city...where a much more dangerous predator lurks...Always Always Always carry pepper spray if you are a woman.

In Washington State, it can be bought just about anywhere, like a hardware or sporting good store, Walmart. Yes, I have carried it. It gives a certain peace of mind for possible control over a sudden confrontation with some wild animal or human. I also carry a dazer for vicious dogs. How about you?

What are you kidding? I carry pepper spray to check my mail! It must be much more dangerous here than where you are lol. It's sold in sporting goods stores where I am over-the-counter.
