I Think it would be a waste of money to try to ban tatoos and piercings in schools. What are they going to do? kick a kid out because of body art? Its not like he or she can just get rid of it easily. I think that if a tattoo is obscene as in swear words or naked bodies, or if its a gang tattoo and it might cause a gang fight then it should be covered or be sent home till they cover it to keep the peace and protect the student body. As for piercings I would be more concerned with how well they are doing in their classes then what holes they have in their body. Banning anything that doesnt risk peoples lives or disrupt classes is difficult. And its more than it the legal implications. Even if the school has uniforms its hard to ban colored skin. And for what? so we can have a bunch of little soldiers marching to the same drummer? With their hair the same and their clothes the same and their shoes the same and no distiguishable markings? I hardly think that would make for a better society. It would be more like nazi repression. And how far then should we go to make everyone comform. Why stop at piercings and tattoos. makeup? hair color? I think that the piercings and tattoos are between the teen and the parents. Most schools have a hard enough time keeping kids in school these days and limited budgets for enforcement of such things. Better to spend the money on educating the kids and working to keep them going onto higher education then finding yet another reason to kick them out. Mosts teens who do that are just trying to figure out who they are, Find some personal self expression and perhaps piss off their parents. In which case the parents and kids have more problems than tattoos. running around making kids cover up their tatoos in summer in the heat is a lot of work for nothing. Not to mention having a lot of sick kids from heat stroke wearing long sleeves or turtle necks. Or worse, kicking them out for tattoos or piercings might cause a whole lot more problems. you have to educate them somewhere or expect a lot of kids on the streets. Causing more problems than just body art. As long as they keep their grades up then why make a bid deal out of it. And if they are having trouble in school, perhaps the money would be better spent on counselors that really do councel kids emotionally as well as academically. Kids need emotional as well as academic support. Not just more reasons to hate school. Being a teen has been and will always be one of the toughest times in a persons life. Let them have a bit of self expression. A way to quietly express themselves. An outlet. Every generation has had their way of quiet rebelion. Long hair. short hair. purple hair. mullets. colored braces. drugs. Protests. Most grow up to be family people with teenages kids of their own. Kids need to be kids. Once they get out into the real world they will grow up, pull out the nose rings and tongue piercings and have to wear longs sleeves in summer to keep their jobs. Not the worst thing in the world. Let them do what kids do. Be themselves while they can. Before reality sets in. It may be just a phase or perhaps a life long form of self expression but who does it really hurt.

When things become common place, they become more acceptable. What happens on the "fringes" often moves into the "mainstream", and when it becomes "bog standard" the kudos of taboo is dissipated. I took my nose ring out 15 years ago because it just became ordinary. Tattoos and piercings have never been more common place in our society (U.K and U.S) If they are banned in schools now, they won't be forever. I taught at a school where multiple ear piercings and nose rings were common, it would never have been allowed when I was at school. Times change.

That depends. If the tattoos are filled with swears or otherwise improper things, then they should be covered. The same goes for piercings. At most, clear jewelry could be worn. But there has to be freedom of expression. If kids can't express and mutilate themselves safely, they'll do it dangerously.

I've always been in favor of personal expression. I was expelled from a school for having a green mohawk. Strangely enough they said it was the color, not the mohawk, that they were against. Odd because there were female students with bright red or purple hair and nothing was said or done to them. Let the children express themselves. It's a method of release in this decadent society.

Yes. It should look like a school-- not a prison.
But as someone pointed out there is no practicle or legal way to ban tatoos since they are irreversible.

Well, if that concerns earrings than no, there are a lot of people who have earrings and I don't see anything wrong with them. And anyway, people should be able to express themselves any way they like, and tattoos and piercings are a way to do it...

The correct spelling is tattoos. If the school regulations say you can't have tattoos...then you're in trouble if you got them.

i dont think so. unless its like a naked chick or something. schools like to use the excuse that its distracting. it might be the first time you see it but if its there every day at school then you get used to it.

if you are going to ban piercings you need to stop girls from wearing stud ear-rings.
do you think people would stand for that?
