A humourous depiction of an "eight-gallon hat", which illustrates how the name ten-gallon hat is an obvious exaggeration.A ten-gallon hat is a type of cowboy hat. The name came about because of a linguistic misunderstanding. Cowboy hats arrived in Texas via Mexico, with Mexican vaqueros who wore hats decorated with galloon (narrow braided trimming) around the crown. The Spanish word for "galloon" is "galón." Texas cowboys misunderstood the word "galón" for "gallon," and a false legend was born. In fact, a ten-gallon hat holds less than a gallon, and if it were to actually hold 10 gallons, it would be too large to wear on the head.
One popular manufacturer of this type of hat is the Stetson company.

Where did you get that hat of a huge capacity of ten-gallon? How would you have been wearing it? How would you have been washing it? I guess, you would not be needing any other cloth to wear when you would be wearing it on.
Better, keep in your country's museum, so that every one may get the chance to see it. Moreover, there it will be safe from even one milligram of water.

none - all the liquid poured in would filter though.. it would hold approximately 4 fluid ounces by soaking the material. however if you are talking about volume to the brim its about 5 quarts.
10 gallon refers to its overall diameter which is the same as a 10 gallon barrel (beer or wine) as used by the pioneers

Less than a gallon.
The cowboys' Ten galon hats are very small in size & can hold less than 1 gallon if it is not leaky or porous or torn.

Its a hat? Well it would just leak... so it doesn't really matter. It would hold a little less than ten to start off then leak out slowly.

its less than one gallon ,if it was actually ten gallons it would be to large to wear on head ............think of the hat in hieght rather than on width
